Just Opened – Sarasota Museum of Art

By | January 22, 2013

DSCF3955Historic Sarasota High welcomes the Sarasota Museum of Art and
Renowned Stick Sculpture Artist Patrick Dougherty!!!

We’ve been waiting and waiting for the new Sarasota Museum of Art aka
SMOA to open in old Sarasota High School building.  For years driving
by the historic school we’ve peeked over to see how far up the ‘fund
raising thermometer’ has shot up.  I’ve always wanted the chance to
peek inside this beautiful school which very much resembles my school
in Ohio.  We’re now seeing big progress in the creation of our future
art museum and there’s all kinds of activity
going on…

As in classic Sarasota style, there’s been a kickoff to the new
museum.   Renowned Stick Sculpture Artist Patrick Dougherty has been
invited to spend 3 weeks in Sarasota to drum up awareness.  He’s been
creating a massive structure of crepe myrtle branches and twigs at the
entrance to our new SMOA.  An enthusiastic group of volunteers has
been commissioned to work on the sculpture.  At the same time docents
are performing tours of the first floor unveiling the plans for our
new community art center.  Guess who has been a frequent visitor?
Yes, me..
I took a tour of the ‘works in progress’ and school and was it ever
informative.  There was an opening Bash which sold out with 650
tickets in record time…  It appears everyones excited for
what our Sarasota art community has in store!

As for our visiting artist, Patrick Dougherty has been constructing
his twig and stick installations nationally for decades.  He resides
in North Carolina but travels alot to places of interest to create his
site specific structures.  It’s been quite interesting to watch the
project come together and it’s clear to see he’s drawn much attention
to the grounds of historic Sarasota High.  Thank you Patrick!

As for the future of SMOA, 22 million is needed to start the actual
project and so far over 15 million has been raised.  Construction
cannot start until the goal has been met and Patrick has us well on
our way.  The Ringling College of Art and Design will spearhead all
operations of our new Sarasota gem..  Along with the new museum there
will be classrooms for continuing studies that will be open to the
public!  There will also be studios for resident artists.   I was
lucky enough to get a special sneak peek of the new building scale

Like building a nest, the stick sculpture is seemingly parallel to all
the hard work that has gone into bringing a wonderful new art resource
to our community.  Maybe I enjoy this because my passion and
livelihood is helping nice folks find a nest in Sarasota!  Stop by and
visit, you’ll be happy you did!  To read more about this project visit
www.sarasotamuseumofart.org or see more of Patrick Dougherty’s work below:

Historic Spanish Point Holly Days and Mangrove Lights

By | November 14, 2012

Every Holiday Season from the end of  November through December, Historic Spanish Point is magically transformed into a winter wonderland where special memories are created and traditions are celebrated as you reminisce through 5000 years of  historical events.

This intriguing, 30 acre natural and historical museum site along Little Sarasota Bay can be enjoyed day and evening as you walk along the nature trails and beautifully maintained gardens with festive music filling the air, brightly colored twinkling lights, seasonally decorated historical buildings and not to be missed the canopy lights through the mangroves. Several festive activities are scheduled throughout the month including pictures with Santa, weekend costume performers, holly holiday party and more.

To share a bit of history, in 1867, John Webb and his family established this elevated piece of land, made it their  homestead along Little Sarasota Bay and  named it “Spanish Point”.  In 1910, Mrs. Bertha Palmer, a Chicago Socialite and widower came to Sarasota to establish her winter estate and in turn purchased several aces of this land for cattle ranching, citrus and real estate development from the Webb Family AND the rest of this fascinating story is up to you to find out by visiting the grounds first hand experiencing and engaging yourself into both Sarasota’s past and present history.

The museum and grounds are open 7 days a week but be sure to visit their website at www.historicspanishpoint.org for more information on scheduled events, times and admission prices.

Spanish Point is located at 337 N. Tamiami Trail, Osprey, FL 941-966-5214

McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre

By | September 20, 2012

McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre has graced Sarasota for over 22 years and has entertained many of us during that time with well known comedians. There’s nothing better than having your own comedy central in your backyard to share laughter, celebrate birthdays and anniversaries or enjoy a lighthearted, fun and entertaining evening out with friends and family. The shows are Wednesday through Sunday.

Conveniently,  they serve  light meals, fresh popcorn and do require a 2 drink minimum. Most evenings there is usually an opening act or two of comedians to warm the crowd and then followed by the scheduled comedian. Most recently we celebrated a birthday milestone at McCurdy’s with a Comedian Hypnotist  who left us totally mesmerized with his ability to hypnotize people including a family member who performed on stage funny skits, antics, sang, danced and so much more.  Fun was had by all ironically including the willing participants.

McCurdy’s also  has  a “Humor Institute “ with training classes to learn  how to entertain on stage or in a group but also to simply  improve your social and communication skills in a job which I found interesting.

When visiting the Sarasota, Bradenton or Venice  areas, an evening at McCurdy’s Comedy Theatre is a sure way to unwind after a long day of fun in the sun and sand. It’s conveniently located on N. Tamiami Trail not too far from the Sarasota Bradenton Airport in a large convenient showroom where no matter where you sit, you always have a good view of the stage. Advance reservations are always recommended as well as checking their website for all the upcoming shows in advance and signing up for their newsletter for future events.
