Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

Marie Selby Botanical GardensMarie Selby Botanical Gardens’ 40th Anniversary Celebration is kicking off with a great surprise. Selby Gardens is officially dedicating a new, permanent exhibition about the life and times of Marie Selby, which will be located in her former residence at the Gardens. The exhibit features rare, vintage photography, a renovation of the home’s first-floor interior and antique botanical illustrations along with images of some of the most iconic flowering tropical plants that make up the Gardens’ living collection.

This event will be the first of many occasions that will celebrate Selby Garden’s 40 years as a world class institution, community asset, and beloved attraction. The event will take place on August 11, 2015 in conjunction with Marie Selby’s 130th birthday.

Free Concerts are Back for Summer

By | June 15, 2015

Friday Fest 2015

Friday Fest 2015There are so many great things to do around this town but one of our favorites is the Friday Fest concerts during the summer at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. One Friday night each month a band sets up on the south lawn overlooking the bay. The music and festivities start at 5pm and continue until 8. There are food and drink vendors onsite so all you need is a blanket or chair. It’s a good idea to get there early as it is a popular event.

This month’s entertainment is the band Kettle of Fish who have played many of the local venues. Check out their website: Kettle of Fish.

For more detailed information visit Van Wezel’s website at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall.

Venice Sharks Tooth Festival

By | March 22, 2015

Sharks Tooth

Sharks ToothThe City of Venice in Sarasota County has been named the “Shark’s Tooth Capital of the World” because of the millions of shark teeth that wash up on our sandy white beaches. The Sharks Tooth Festival takes place each Spring against the back drop of Venice’s best shark tooth hunting beach, where fossil collectors from around the Southeast display and sell sharks teeth and other prehistoric fossils. More than 100 artists from around the State market their original work.

Sharks Tooth FestivalThe festival will be held at the Venice Airport Festival Grounds on April 10-12th this year. Food vendors will serve up delicious dishes from seafood to BBQ. Live entertainment is on stage throughout the Festival. Children are entertained with such events as the Sharks Tooth Scramble and Mote Marine’s hands on exhibit. All proceeds of the festival benefit Special Olympics Florida-Sarasota County.

Manatee County Heritage Days

By | February 21, 2015

Manatee County Heritage DaysMarch 1-31, 2015 the 36th annual Heritage Days celebration will focus on our county’s history. All month long, historical sites and organizations throughout our county will celebrate our community’s heritage by providing opportunities for our area’s residents and visitors to experience the past. Reenactments, special exhibits, lectures, open houses and family programming will highlight the month’s events.

For thirty-six years, the Manatee Heritage Association has sponsored Heritage Days. Originally a week in length, Heritage Days grew to nine days, and in 1995, Manatee Heritage Days expanded to a month long event. The activities are as varied as walking tours and concerts. Events take place throughout Manatee County in many different communities. Through these events at area historical sites, participants will experience the pioneer lifestyle and learn how Manatee County has grown and developed.

Attached is a schedule for events. Most are free, though some require a reservation or admission fee. For specific information about an event, please call the number listed on the schedule. For more information about the Manatee Heritage Days, in general, please call (941) 741-4070. Join with us in this countywide celebration of our community’s past.
