By | June 25, 2016

Cevichela

CevichelaChef Darwin Santa Maria and Tom Golen, chef/owner of Señor Siesta are on a mission.  Donning chef jackets like culinary superheroes, these two like-minded lovers of Latin fare have paired together to bring affordable Latin street food to the Siesta Key ‘hood.  Which means not just the homes, condos and businesses on Siesta Key, but also the beach itself.  That’s right. . . healthy and innovative Latin food delivered to your beach chair as you take in the awesomeness of the best beach in Florida, if not the entire USA!

Chef Darwin returns to Siesta Key to turn Señor Siesta, one of SarasotaFoodies’ favorite restaurants on the Key, into a hip, quick-service restaurant that offers dine in, take-out or home/office/beach delivery of a menu featuring ceviche, tacos, salads, and stir-fry Latin street food know as Chifa.  Cevichela also offers Latin twists on American fare like Chicken Wings with aji limo yuzu and a seaweed/radish mix, or maybe try one of their “My Way Saichipapas” – a crispy hot dog with bacon, and potatoes smothered in a creamy Peruvian mustard sauce.

Apollonia Mediterranean Grill

By | February 27, 2016

Apollonia

ApolloniaWe have been talking about dining at Apollonia since it opened at The Shoppes at University Town Center over two years ago and finally got around to it this past week. It took over the restaurant formerly occupied by Urban Flats and it didn’t take too many cosmetic changes to adapt to the space.

Apollonia BarThe atmosphere is casual and comfortable. We were seated inside at a table next to the front windows which are large sliders that open when the weather permits as was the case for us. They have a generous bar area as well as a few outdoor covered tables.

Our server greeted us promptly and we ordered a glass of wine from their extensive list of wines by the glass. I ordered the Gyro Platter which consisted of rotisserie spiced lamb with rice pilaf, grilled vegetables, tzatziki and pita bread. My husband ordered the grouper Florentine. We were pleased with the quality of the meals, presentation, and felt the prices were very reasonable.

If you’re in the mood for a little Mediterranean food I would recommend this restaurant. Check out their website for more information.

The Rosemary in Sarasota

By | January 29, 2016

The Rosemary

The RosemaryDowntown Sarasota has a new option for bistro dining. The Rosemary in Citrus Square is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner serving traditional and contemporary dishes with an emphasis on healthy options prepared with fresh ingredients from regional farms.

We recently had a group of 50 there for dinner and everyone raved about the food, service and ambience. George Armstrong (formerly of Treviso at The Ringling Museum) reports that reservations have been full particularly during the before theatre hours so call and reserve early and check it out. You won’t be disappointed!

After dinner check out the entertainment at The Blue Rooster in the next block over on 4th Street. We found this makes for a fun evening!

For more information and to view the menu visit The Rosemary Sarasota.

The Table Creekside Restaurant

By | September 20, 2015

Table Creekside

Table CreeksideThe Table Creekside Restaurant on Phillippi Creek in Sarasota, FL is where Joe and Missy go when we have an anniversary or other special dinner date! It is easily our favorite upscale place to eat complete with a water view! This centrally-located restaurant is located on the banks of Phillippi Creek in a converted old house built in the mid 1950’s.

The Table features a super and pocket-friendly Happy Hour daily from 4:00-6:30 with awesome drink specials and tapas food including the not-to-be-missed Bacon Jam Flatbread. For dinner, the specials of the day are out of this world with some very risqué dishes that the chef’s pull off with ease. The wine list is extensive but not expensive and the wait staff is excellently trained and attentive! Dinners range between $20-$45+ each.

Located on US41 at: 5365 S. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. Hours: Open at 4pm M-S and Sunday brunch begins at 11am. Make sure to call for reservations (941-921-9465) and come by boat too!

The Granary in Lakewood Ranch

By | August 31, 2015

The Granary

The GranaryAs of today there is a new dining option for breakfast and lunch in Lakewood Ranch. Karen and Malcolm Ronney (former owners of McAllister’s on Main Street in Lakewood Ranch) have opened The Granary in th Ace Hardware/Crowder’s Plaza on Lakewood Ranch Blvd. We had the good fortune to attend their soft opening last week and here’s what we found.

The Granary InteriorThe ambience is rustic and comfortable with exposed brick, soft lantern lighting, rustic wood tables. The menu features traditional favorites with a modern twist. I ordered the “french toast sandwich” which was french toast with apple slices, brie and caramel in the middle. It was really good, the apples were nice and tender as they grill them along with the toast. My husband ordered the “ranch hand omelete” which was stuffed with all the meats (sausage, bacon and ham), diced red pepper, topped with hollandaise sauce, chopped tomatoes and scallions. It was delicious as well. The coffee was good too and they have quite a few hand-crafted selections as well as the set up to get a cup to go if you like.

They have beer, wine and bubbles, desserts and catering available too. They are open 7 days a week: Monday – Friday from 7:30am-3pm; Saturday & Sunday from 8am-3pm.

To check out their menu visit The Granary.

Pomona Bistro and Wine Bar

By | July 21, 2015

Pomona Bistro

Pomona BistroRecently we had a neighborhood dinner at Pomona Bistro and Wine Bar. I had not dined there before but had heard it was a great restaurant. We had a group of 30 there on a Wednesday night and they handled us beautifully. One of the two owners (Arthur) was there and couldn’t have been more attentive.

The menu is varied and changes seasonally. It features locally sourced meats, seafood and produce. They have a great selection of small plates as well as full dinners and desserts. I had the bistro salad with dijon mustard vinaigrette followed by a roasted halibut. Both were delicious and plentiful…sadly no room for dessert.

Like the dinner menu, the wine list evolves throughout the seasons with heavier reds in the winter and lighter whites and rosés in the spring and summer. The list features wines from California, Oregon, France, Italy and Spain. To bring out the best flavors, the wines are decanted and served by the quartino (approximately 1-1/2 glass), half carafe (approximately 2-1/2 glasses) or by the bottle.

When the weather cools off a bit we’ll be back at Pomona to check out the outdoor lounge complete with a fireplace and of course to have another fine meal.

The restaurant is located north of Fruitville on North Orange Avenue in Citrus Square. Check out their website for more information and sample menu at Pomona Bistro and Wine Bar.

10th Annual Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week

By | May 19, 2015

Savor Sarasota

Savor SarasotaThe first two weeks of June is one of my favorite times of the year in Sarasota. Traffic has died down after the busy winter season and many of the best restaurants around participate in Savor Sarasota Restaurant Week. It’s a great opportunity to try new places or visit some of your favorites as they offer special menus and prices from June 1st through the 14th. During Savor Sarasota you can enjoy 3-course meals for just $15 per person for lunch and $29 per person for dinner. Not all of the restaurants are open for lunch so check their website for participating restaurants and hours.

Burger & Beer Joint is Now Open at The Mall at University Town Center

By | April 24, 2015

Burger & Beer Joint

Burger & Beer JointBurger & Beer Joint recently opened at The Mall at University Town Center (their 5th location). Their menu is heavily centered on massive gourmet burgers and a huge selection of beer but they also have appetizers, salads and other items to choose from. You can select a burger from their signature list or design your own. Or if you’re really hungry try the Motherburger…10 pounds of Premium Black Angus Beef!

A unique offering is their “Adult Shakes” which are alcoholic drinks made with ice cream and various liquors. The atmosphere is a sports and rock & roll theme.

Check out their menu at http://bnbjoint.com/burgers

The Mall at UTC has emerged as a great destination for dining with Kona Grill, Seasons 52, Brio Tuscan Grille, Cheesecake Factory, Capital Grille, Sophie’s at Saks and now the Burger & Beer Joint. This is a great time of year to get out and visit some of these new and local favorites.
