Cannon’s Steakhouse and Tavern

By | March 17, 2018

Cannons SteakhouseThere’s another great steakhouse in Sarasota…Cannons in Gulf Gate is a cross between high-end cuisine and the causal dining atmosphere of a neighborhood tavern. This place is on par with steakhouses such as Ruth Chris and Morton’s for a much more reasonable price. The staff is exceptionally friendly and the entertainment is great.

The menu has something for everyone! They offer steaks, prime rib, one-of-a-kind salads, mouthwatering hamburgers and sandwiches, chicken & fish. Portions are large and sides are definitely shareable. You must try the orange cake for dessert…a Florida favorite!

They are open Tuesday through Sunday from 4:30-9:30pm with happy hour until 6:30 (beer and wine). They are located in Gulf Gate at 6540 Superior Avenue. Call for reservations at 941-924-7171.

Cafe Baci for Great Italian in Sarasota

By | February 16, 2018

Cafe Baci

Cafe Baci

Café Baci in Sarasota strives to perfectly recreate the full Italian experience. From the moment you walk through our door, you sense the difference and you feel the culture. The atmosphere here is enchanting and peaceful, the Italian cuisine reminiscent of that created by some of the greatest Italian Chefs.

Cafe Baci AntepastoWe had an excellent meal here last week before heading to the Van Wezel for a show. Even though they have been around for many years they still have a very loyal clientele and wonderful food. We were warmly greeted upon our arrival and seated promptly. We did have a reservation which I highly recommend as they were full by 6pm on a Tuesday night!

Cafe Baci InteriorThe waiter was so attentive and personable. After we placed our order they brought out fresh bread with olive oil dipping spices and an antipasto for the table. Our meals were three different fish dishes (salmon, flounder and snapper) and each was really tasty. The entrees included a starch and perfectly cooked green beans on this night. Salads with the meals are at an extra cost but the portions of the meals were plenty without it. They have an excellent wine selection as well as some scrumptious sounding desserts.

They are open Monday through Friday for lunch and every day for dinner. Relax and enjoy a delicious meal at Café Baci. Savor the delicate flavors….you’ll feel you are in Italy, if but only for a moment.

To view the menu visit Cafe Baci.

Oak & Stone for Pizza & Beer

By | January 16, 2018

Oak & Stone

Oak & Stone

Oak & Stone restaurant features craft beer and artisan pizza. We had occasion to dine there for a casual night out recently and were happy to find this great spot in the University Parkway/Honore Avenue area of Sarasota.

They have created a place that is suitable for a boys night, a date night, or a family dinner with a warm and welcoming space for all ages. There is an open air kitchen, dining room, full bar, and a variety of seating options including an outside patio area outfitted with gas heaters for this cooler weather, billiards table, corn hole and large screen TV’s with the latest sporting events.

Oak & Stone PizzaTheir artisanal wood-fired pizzas are the star of the menu…handcrafted with dough that undergoes a 36 hour fermentation process with triple filtered water and topped with sauce that will keep you coming back for more.  Whether you are partial to B.Y.O.P. (build your own pie) or selecting one of the many custom craft pizzas. The standard tavern fare is elevated with options such as Sticky Porter BBQ Sliders, Pretzel Crusted Tuna Sashimi, or Triple Cheddar Pale Ale Mac. Fresh offerings such as delicious salads and hummus plate round out the menu. We opted for the BBQ chicken pizza to share along with a salad and this was plenty for two.

Oak & Stone BeerYou can’t forget the beer as Oak & Stone boasts the largest RIFD technology self-serve brew wall in the region, with 56 taps of golden beer goodness that you can pour by the ounce. Showcasing local and American craft breweries. The great thing about this is that you can try a sip before choosing a beer to accompany your meal.

The next time you’re in the mood for a casual night out check out Oak & Stone!

Anna’s Deli Siesta Key & Sarasota

By | December 30, 2017

Anna's Deli

Anna's DeliOne of the mainstays in casual dining in Sarasota is Anna’s Deli. They have been around since 1971 and currently operate two locations: one on Siesta Key and one in the University Park area of Sarasota. They are consistently winning “Best Of…” awards in Sarasota.

They do have your typical deli fare but what sets them apart is their specialty sandwiches. I stopped in for lunch recently and had their famous “Surfer” sandwich which features thinly sliced turkey, ham and cucumber with swiss cheese and their special sauce. This is served on your choice of bread which is always fresh. The sandwich easily feeds two people and at around $8 is a real bargain!

The restaurants are open from 10:30am to 4:00pm daily. You can eat in or take out from either location. To view the menu and locations visit www.annasdelis.com or call 941-349-4888.

Cabbage Key Inn Restaurant

By | October 10, 2017

Cabbage Key Inn Restaurant

Cabbage Key Inn RestaurantThe Cabbage Key Inn Restaurant is located on a little island with no cars, and not even a single paved road. This historic restaurant sits up on an Indian shell mound, giving it excellent views of Pine Island Sound. The entire island is a secluded paradise and is only accessible by boat. If you don’t have a boat you can still get there by ferry from Bokeelia on Pine Island which is about an hour and a half south of Sarasota.

Cabbage Key Restaurant InteriorWalk inside, and you’ll quickly realize how unique this historic restaurant is. There are several areas to choose from, including a bar that has been serving this area for more than 60 years. The whole restaurant exudes rustic charm. In the bar and formal dining room, there are beautiful Cypress floors and working fireplaces. Replicas of game fish, antiques, and photographs showcasing the area’s history decorate the walls. In the main dining area, the walls and ceiling are covered with thousands of dollar bills, signed by past visitors. If you ask your server for a marker, you can sign your own dollar bill and leave your mark as well. The open-air main dining room looks out on the water and lush tropical trees, covered with moss and flowers. It really is a spectacular view for nature-lovers.

Cabbage Key Restaurant EntranceThe menu is full of delicious seafood, sandwiches, and burgers. There is a rumor that this restaurant inspired Jimmy Buffet’s “Cheeseburger in Paradise” song. Don’t forget to end your meal with a tasty and refreshing slice of key lime pie.

There is a short hiking trail to an observation/water tower for a great view of the island and surrounding water and before you depart, don’t miss the gift shop for that perfect Florida souvenir.

The Cabbage Key Inn Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner 365 days a year. Reservations are appreciated. To ask a question or make a reservation at the restaurant, call (239) 283-2278.

Metro Diner Now Open in Sarasota

By | September 6, 2017

Metro Diner Logo

Metro Diner LogoAs part of the renovation of the Westfield Siesta Key Mall, new restaurants are moving in and one that is now open is Metro Diner.

Since its humble beginnings in 1938 and its revival as Metro Diner in 1992, Jacksonville’s favorite place for breakfast has been serving satisfied guests for nearly 25 years. In 2000, master chef Mark Davoli and family took over and elevated the menu to include innovative new dishes created from local ingredients. Known for warm, welcoming service, familiar faces and award-winning food, Metro Diner is a go-to eatery for locals, visitors and those just passing through town.

They have expanded throughout the southeastern United States and in Florida to 18 locations with Sarasota being the latest. They are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner seven days a week.

We had brunch there on a recent Sunday morning and it was buzzing. After a short wait we were seated and promptly greeted and served. I would describe the food as comfort food with many popular menu items. Portions are large. It was all good and I’m sure we’ll be going back soon. Here’s a couple photos of our meals:

Duffy’s Sports Grill Now Open in Sarasota

By | August 3, 2017

Duffy's Logo

Duffy's Logo

Duffy’s Sports Grill opened recently on University Parkway in the former Revelry location between Lockwood Ridge Road and Tuttle Avenue. The original “Duffy’s Drafthouse” was founded by two childhood friends turned business partners in Lake Park, Florida in 1985.  In addition to plenty of beer choices, Duffy’s had only 4 items on the menu:  Grilled Mahi Sandwich, Hot Ham and Cheese, Smoked Sausage and ½ lb. Cheeseburger.  All of these original items were served with potato chips so there was no need for silverware or even a fryer.  From the beginning, Duffy’s Drafthouse became known for “The Coldest Beer” and “Best Burger” in town…and it was wildly popular.

Duffy's InteriorToday, rebranded as “Duffy’s Sports Grill”, the combination of quality dining, memorable hospitality and sports has proven to be a successful recipe. Recognized as the premier sports themed restaurant concept in South Florida, they continue to expand with locations from Miami to Orlando. The new location in Sarasota completely remodeled the space to include more TV’s than I’ve ever seen in a sports bar. The menu has a wide variety of choices and service is friendly and prompt. Next time your favorite team is playing (or not) check out Duffy’s.

Visit www.duffysmvp.com to view the menu and check out their locations.

Il Conte in Lakewood Ranch

By | July 25, 2017

Il Conte

Il ConteThere is a new dining option in Lakewood Ranch at San Marco Plaza. Il Conte Ristorante & Pizzeria opened a couple months ago and is receiving rave reviews. The menu features homemade Italian cuisine inspired by the region of Puglia, Italy. This enchanting seaside region of southern Italy hosts vast beaches, lush farmlands and vineyards, and breathtaking castle ruins.

Home to many of the dishes that Italy is famous for, Puglia is most known for its fresh and local produce. Chickpeas, homegrown herbs and spices, olives and olive oil, tomatoes, and an abundance of fresh seafood are just a few of the ingredients that have crafted Puglia’s cuisine. At Il Conte the presentation is modern and coincides with Puglia’s reliance on greens, legumes, pasta, seafood, olive oils, and simple cheeses.

Il Conte PizzaOn a recent visit we shared a Parma pizza with prosciutto, burrata cheese and arugula. Their pizzas are handcrafted with inventive ingredients. With a glass of regional red wine this was a delicious option. There are other menu options including salads, sushi, pasta, seafood and meat dishes. We will definitely be back to try some of those in the near future.

The décor is a clean, modern open concept with tables, high tops and bar seating as well as outdoor patio dining. A full bar is available including regional wines and Italian craft beers. They are open for lunch and dinner seven days a week. To learn more about Il Conte and/or view the menu visit their website at www.ilconterestaurant.com.

Alpine Steakhouse in Sarasota

By | June 15, 2017

Alpine Steakhouse
Alpine Steakhouse
If you’ve never heard of the Alpine Steakhouse in Sarasota you are missing out on  something of a cultural landmark. Being more than 40 years old, it was the first place in Sarasota to specialize in prime meats of the New York City steakhouse persuasion, and has continually been operated and crafted to perfection by the same family. It’s a combination butcher shop, market and restaurant.

Since opening in 1975, Alpine Steakhouse has specialized in homemade ingredients and prime meats pioneered by Karl Ehmer, the revolutionary butcher from New York City. Matt Rebhan’s father, Mark, took over the business of his father, Henry, and the restaurant continues to be a collaborative father-son family effort for your enjoyment to this day.

Diners, Drive-Ins, DivesIt was also the first, and remains the only, place in the whole state that sells fresh TurDucKen, a contemporary Cajun dish involving a whole boneless turkey stuffed with a whole boneless chicken, a whole boneless duck and any mix of sausage and seasoned bread dressing. The dish is immensely complicated, requiring the knife skills of a surgeon, and, with actual roasting time, takes 16 hours to prepare. It has been featured on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” show on the Food Network.

Alpine Steakhouse is proud to be the recipient of the Sarasota Magazine Readers’ Choice award for “Best Restaurant for Steak” for the past consecutive four years. You are tempted by only the best prime dry-aged steaks, veal, lamb, chops, chicken and fresh seafood to make your dining decision exciting enough before you consider the traditional German specialties like wiener-schnitzel, sauerbraten and bratwurst and more. And with more than 60 imported beers along with an extensive fine wine selection every palate will be more than satisfied.

Alpine Steakhouse Entry

They are centrally located in at 4520 S. Tamiami Trail and hours are Monday to Thursday 9am to 9pm, Friday & Saturday 9am to 9:30pm and closed on Sunday. Phone 941-922-3797.
