It’s Strawberry Season At Detweiler’s Farmer’s Market!

By | February 21, 2011

Detweiler's Farmer's MarketOne of the coolest things about living in Florida is our year-long growing season.  We’ve got the juiciest tomatoes in the summertime, the biggest strawberries in the wintertime, the best you-name-it in the meantime – and no matter what your flavor, we’ve got the best place to get it: Detweiler’s Farmer’s Market.

To us locals, Detweiler’s isn’t a big secret (no matter how much we’d like it to be).  Simply put, it’s just the best place in Sarasota to get your produce.  I go out of my way at least once a week to see what Henry, Sr.’s got for dinner, and I don’t even GLANCE at the produce department at the supermarkets anymore.

And that’s not even the best part …

Back by the deli counter, just around the corner from the specialty cheese display, there’s a genuine, bonafide Big Olaf ice cream stand.  You haven’t had ice cream until you’ve tried Sarasota’s local creamery – hands down the best ice cream in the world – and right now they’re selling fresh strawberry milkshakes made with real Florida strawberries.

Here’s what Henry, Sr. says about his shop:

I love to see the smile  on your face, when you tell me, thats the way I remember it tasting …when  mom or dad picked it FRESH from their Garden.

You know what I love, Henry?  Strawberries.

Captain Curt’s on Siesta Key

By | January 20, 2011

This isn’t your grandfather’s karaoke.  But there is one 80-ish year old dude who regularly brings down the house at Captain Curt’s if you’re lucky enough to catch him on one of the Karaoke nights: (Thurs-Sat).  The scene is more locals and people who really think they can sing (some can really belt one out!) over drunken bachelorettes who “will survive,” though they will always manage to make their appearance eventually.  Sing, clap along, and try to do more “laughing with” than “laughing at.”  Some of the best free entertainment on Siesta Key outside of watching the dance floor at the Beach Club.

Merry Christmas From Lake Sarasota!

By | December 29, 2010

Diane McDonald's House O' LightsI am proud to admit that I live in the Lake Sarasota subdivision and we do have many families that are involved with helping children and their families throughout this holiday season. There was a wonderful gathering of residents to put on a benefit to adopt a family for Christmas. They had games and events along with auction items to raise fund of $1000.00 for these families. The Golf Frisbee Park was the site that this event took place. I was very proud of my 17 year old son Sean who brought the children together for some extra fun events. The families were picked by Lake View Elementary School nearby.

Come by my home to view the lights. Merry Christmas!

Holiday Boat Parade Of Lights, Sarasota, Florida 2010

By | December 15, 2010

The 24th Annual Boat Parade Lights is one of many traditions Sarasota has to offer.  We are a sophisticated city with small town heart of gold and this annual event is one that just reminds you of what a fantastic place this really is.  Thousands of spectators set up beach chairs along the route and watched in awe the floating works of art!  In case you were unable to attend (or, for those unfortunate northerners busy digging out of snow drifts), you can click here to see the ‘Sarasota Patch’ video and pictures!
