Biking the Legacy Trail
By cheryltorres | January 12, 2013

One of the nicest outdoor activities I have found living here in Sarasota County is the The Legacy Trail. Most of the local folks know of The Legacy Trail but for those who don’t know, The Legacy Trail really is just a paved over railroad bed of the CSX Railroad but a wonderful finished addition to outdoor recreation of Old Florida Serenity as it once was.
The trail begins at Palmer Ranch in Sarasota and runs south through Oscar Scherer Park to the Historic Venice Train Depot in downtown Venice approximately a 15 mile stretch of continuous run, bike or walk. The road then continues without interruption through the Venetian Waterway Parkway along both sides of the Intracoastal Waterway to either Casperson Beach, Shamrock Park and Nature Center.
It’s not just for cyclists but also for walkers with dogs like myself or just walkers, joggers and the occasional rollerblader(s) so exercise with caution. Most of the trailheads have restrooms and water fountains but also advised to carry your own water on the trail, bring a camera for a photo opportunity and perhaps a cell phone too in case of emergency.
For more information, visit www.scgov.net/parks for The Legacy Trail points of entry, free parking, information on history and location of the trailheads and map.
