Van Wezel Residence …A Community Treasure

The historically designated Van Wezel residence on Lido Key was recently showcased as part of the Alliance’s program of “Best Opportunities in Historic Preservation, which brings attention to important buildings of architectural and historical significance. The waterfront house, designed by noted architect Thomas Reed Martin, was the former residence of philanthropists Lewis and Eugenia Van Wezel.

As part of the tour, several topics relating to the Van Wezel home were presented by Sarasota County History Center Historical Preservation Specialist Lorrie Muldowney talking about the history of the house, and Joyce Hart, interior designer and Sarasota City Preservation Board member, discussed the interior features. Architect Thorning Little presented the challenges and possibilities in restoring the home, and landscape architect Martha Horton highlighted the various species of plantings on the grounds.
