The grand opening of Riverwalk in Bradenton will be held next week on October 17th at 5:00pm. This walkway along the Manatee River stretches from Manatee Memorial Hospital to the Bradenton Central Library.  Designed by Kimley-Horn and Associates, the Riverwalk is not only beautiful but also sustainable.

Their vision was to create a place that would draw both the residents of the community as well as a broad spectrum of visitors from all over the country. One of the primary goals was to design a park that would appeal to individuals of all ages and interests.

There is a kids’ playground, interactive fountain and Family Fun Zone by the pavillion and event area, which will also be the site of the 2012 Bradenton Blues Festival. There is a fishing pier, skate park, beach volleyball court, kayak and canoe launch and more.

In addition to native vegetation that has been planted throughout the site, an old storm retention pond was converted into a marshy wetland planted full of Florida native grasses. The wetland continues on through a bio swale that connects to a tidal marsh. The tidal marsh connects via a pipe system to the Manatee River, which allows the tidal marsh to fluctuate with the cycle of the tides. The tidal marsh area will be used by the South Florida Museum as an outdoor science classroom. The tidal marsh will replicate the river’s tides and similar ecosystem and thus allow viewers to learn and better understand the water around us.

Many community events will be held at Riverwalk over the coming months. For a complete list and more information visit Realize Bradenton.
