When people come to Florida, they come for the golf, for the beaches, the weather, or even a little talking mouse named Mickey.  What are they NOT coming for?

The opera.

Unless they’re coming for the Sarasota Opera, that is.

Now in it’s 53rd season, the Sarasota Opera has a long and storied history with Sarasota’s arts culture.  It’s an internationally acclaimed organization and features popular operas in both the European and American tradition.  The Sarasota Opera owns and operates the building, but the space is also home to the Sarasota Ballet and the Sarasota Symphony Orchestra.

In 2007 the Opera underwent a $20 million renovation to restore the theatre to its 1920’s glory.  The interior was reconfigured for superior sightlines and the the pit doubled in size to accommodate larger orchestras for more intense performances.  It stands today in the heart of downtown as a monument to our cultural mecca.

Oh, and even if you’re not into the Opera – Elvis played here.
